Kids comics

Over the years I have drawn many comics for kids in the 8-12 age range. This all started when I drew comics about and for my own stepkids in the early 2000s – I gave each of them a comics adventure of their own, and at the same time got to hone my comics writing and drawing skills.

An example of this is the comic ‘The Riddle of Nine’, for my stepdaughter Ellen’s ninth birthday in 2004.

I gave Ellen an adventure in the land of dreams, where she has to fight the evil queen of nightmares. I put in elements from Alice in Wonderland, Labyrinth and Sandman.

My drawing style was still kind of crude, but I’m definitely proud of this one!

A few years later, I got a great spot in kids’ magazine Flo’, where I drew about Stella, an 11-year-old (in fact heavily based on Ellen). Stella got a second run in magazine Hoe Overleef Ik, in which she was a 14-year-old.

A few years later, around 2006, I got a great spot in kids’ magazine Flo’, where I drew about Stella, an 11-year-old (in fact heavily based on Ellen).

Stella got a second run in magazine Hoe Overleef Ik, in which she was a 14-year-old. You can read an episode here.

In 2000 I started working for new kids magazine Jump, where I got to assist the two young editors with their Zoom-interviews:

In 2002, I started my most ambitious kids comic yet: Casa Kiki, about a 14-year-old who moved with her family to Italy to start a hotel. Each story was a 5-page adventure in girls’ comics magazine Tina.

I also write kids comics scripts for others. I’ve had the pleasure to work with great artists like Floris De Smedt, Juliette de Wit, Mars Gremmen, Kimberley and Geo Geelen, and Dorith Graef.
